Why Your Injury Isn't Just an Injury Ask a Calgary athlete what recovery looks like and you'll get a familiar list: rest, rehab exercises, a few weeks of physio. All of it matters. But at Group 23 Sports Medicine, Dr. Jason Ahlan, ND spends much of his time on the part of recovery that rarely makes the list. Dr. Ahlan is a naturopathic doctor working inside a sports medicine clinic, which surprises people. His framing is straightforward: "We are allied health professionals," he says, noting that naturopathic doctors were recently included in the compendium of roles for team-based primary care. "I do think we deserve a spot at that table, where we can contribute, and we can collaborate with other professionals for the best of the patient." He's quick to say this isn't a critique of anyone else on the team. The physicians and physios he works alongside are "some of the smartest people I've worked with." The difference, he says, is structural: "They're somewhat restricted in time. They may be seeing 20 or more patients a day. They may have to really hone in on certain chief concerns." His own appointments are built differently. "Our new patient visits are an hour, so we can get into different things, like sleep and nutrition. We can answer questions about things like intermittent fasting, or chronic pain, psychological effects of pain. We can just get a little bit deeper, just because we have the benefit of time." That last item comes up a lot in his practice, and it's where he's been putting his attention. Dr. Ahlan was recently invited onto a panel with the Alberta Pain Research Network, an Alberta Health Services initiative launched in 2019, alongside a psychologist and a physiotherapist, looking at alternative treatments for chronic pain. What interests him is the part athletes rarely hear discussed. "A lot of the psychological effects of pain and chronic pain. There's a lot of things that contribute to your perception of pain." Stress, fear, and how you've come to think about your own body all shape the experience of pain, not just what's happening at the site of the injury. If the pain has outlasted the tissue damage, the plan probably needs to be bigger than the tissue. Which is the case Dr. Ahlan makes for a longer appointment: not a replacement for your physio or sports physician, but one more allied health professional invested in your recovery, with the time to look at the whole picture.
